Porch Ceramics

Inaperlas Magazine had an afternoon with Porch Ceramics and learned how to throw on the wheel, the importance of environment in a creative space, and their favourite tunes.

I’ve heard little rumblings of this relaxed pottery studio by the beach in Tama. How did this idea come to life?

I learned pottery in Venice, California while I was living  there, I continued potting thru south east Asia and New Zealand until I landed here in Sydney. Sam and I met thru a mutual friend and absolute lord Clint Allen.  I gave them a lesson in what is now our pottery studio in Tamarama. As you could imagine it went great.

You’ve created such a nice environment to work in. Little intimate classes with friends is such a great way to create. Is this setting important to Porch Ceramics?

Without the community behind us we would honestly cease to exist - It’s really been amazing what our friends have done for us since the very beginning. We’ve tried to create something unique, warm and welcoming.

Do you have a favourite piece you’ve made? What’s its story?

Favorite thing if ever made is a coffee cup and pill dish for my Grandmother. Knowing she uses it every morning makes me feel like I’m there.

I’m always looking for the perfect plate that doesn’t distract from the dish.. How does being a chef and creating pottery intertwine?

We first met he wanted to make dishes for his cafe. I on the other hand find it hard to be distracted by anything when foods around.

The best dishes allow you to make the most simple yet delicious food.
